How to make rotisserie chicken at home

There are two main ways to make one at home.. the slow cooker and the oven. You can also make one on a grill, but for most people, that's not a year-round option.

How long to cook Rotisserie chicken in the oven

For a 4-5 pound chicken, you will need to roast it at 425°F for 70-85 minutes, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. To prevent it from drying out in the hot oven, periodically brush the juices that have accumulated in the pan.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 4 hours

Total Time: 4 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 - 5 lb whole chicken, innards removed
  • 1/2 Tbsp smoked paprika
  • kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder

Instructions

  1. Add 4 balls of aluminum foil to the bottom of a large slow cooker to create a rack for the chicken to cook on. Prepare the chicken by removing the internal parts and patting them dry inside and out.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients, then rub the mixture all over the chicken. Place the chicken in the slow cooker on top of the metal balls.
  3. Cover and cook on HIGH for 4-5 hours, until juices run clear and chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.
  4. To get a crispy skin, heat the grill to high and place the chicken on a large baking sheet lined with parchment (for easy cleanup). Drizzle the chicken with olive oil and simmer for a few minutes, or until cooked to your liking.
